Teachers: Save 13 Hours A Week with AI!
13 hours saved!? It almost sounds too good to be true, right? Let me walk you through my math.
Teachers work an average of 54 hours per week, according to Merrimack College’s 2022 Teacher Survey. For more detail, check out the following figure from the report.
From the 1st Annual Merrimack College Teacher Survey: 2022 Results
In January 2020, McKinsey Consulting released a report titled “How artificial intelligence will impact K–12 teachers.” This report found that 13 hours of teachers’ work could be automated through technology.
(Side Note: I wish I had even more recent data to share — I would be very interested to see how these figures would be updated considering the rise of ChatGPT and other Generative AI tools that have become widespread since this paper was released).
Regardless, if my math is correct, 54 hours minus 13 hours equals a far more manageable work week for teachers (41 hours, to be exact).

Of course, how those 13 theoretical hours get used is out of my control. But we at Teacher’s AIed will strive to help you reclaim those 13 hours through AI tools.
What are some of the tasks that could save teachers time?
Lesson Planning and Preparation - McKinsey claims that 5 hours could be reallocated from lesson planning and preparation. For some ideas on how this might be done, check out our posts on Lesson Planning with AI, in which we wrote a lesson plan in 3 minutes using ChatGPT.
Evaluation and Feedback - One of the core threats of AI in the K-12 space is the implications for assessments. In our article, “From Pencils to Pixels: AI Tools Reshaping Student Assessments,” we suggest a few tools that can not only save teachers time, but also safeguard against plagiarism.
Administration - Many use cases for AI are not necessarily specific to Education but are still extremely valuable to educators. For example, consider how teachers could use Calendy - a scheduling software - to simplify their teacher-conference planning process.
Imagine if you had 13 hours each week back…how would you spend it?
What we owe to ourselves 🎁
AI can’t and won’t take away the stress of teaching, but it can help you teach more effortlessly. This is a true gift.

We know firsthand that teaching is no easy task.
We know the many hats that teachers have to wear on a daily basis.
Quick personal anecdote: when I was a middle school math and science teacher, I would take a moment each morning just to prepare myself for whatever challenge I would face that day.
While I could not predict what crazy thing some middle-schooler would do (they never ceased to amaze me with their creativity…), I knew that if I just focused on the parts of my job I could control — lesson planning, assessment design, grading, providing feedback, etc. — I would be better prepared to address the mini-crisis of the day.
Now, empowered and equipped with the knowledge of AI, teachers can streamline those areas of their job that are under their control.
Give yourself and other teachers the gift of knowing how to leverage AI tools to teach effortlessly.

What does Teacher’s AIed have in the works?
As we mentioned last week, the Teacher’s AIed team is excited for 2024!
We teased that we weren’t ready to share our master plans. We are excited to share the details with you soon, but sadly, “soon” isn’t here quite yet.
But, I will tell you, if you like the posts that were linked in this newsletter above, we think you will really like what is coming!
We know that navigating the strengths and weaknesses of AI in Education is an extremely nuanced concept. We want to dive into that nuance with you and for you.
Stay tuned 🙂
