🔍 Custom GPTs and UNESCO's Framework Uncovered

Estimated Read Time: 2 min 33 sec

Teach with expert insights on AI, curated by your trusty Teacher’s AIde

Hello and welcome back to Teacher's AIed, where we're gearing up for winter break with more excitement than a classroom full of students plotting their snowball strategies - let's dive into AI with the same gusto!

Listen to This!

We at Teacher’s AIed are big fans of Matt Miller’s and Holly Clark’s “Digital Learning Podcast.”

The episode I listened to today, ChatGPT Changes and a Vision of AI in Education, was so thought-provoking. Seriously, you need to listen to it.

Here are my three takeaways:

  • Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could become our reality in only three years. What’s AGI? According to ChatGPT, “AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence, refers to a type of artificial intelligence that is capable of understanding, learning, and applying its knowledge across a wide range of tasks, essentially mimicking the cognitive abilities of humans.”

  • The Power of Custom GPTs (more in the next section!)

  • Keeping Humans in the Loop and Being Bilingual. Holly and Matt discuss UNESCO’s “Guidance for generative AI in education and research.” To borrow some of their terminology, I love how the UNESCO framework insists on prioritizing human-centered design and values bilingualism - the ability to communicate with humans and AI.

This really was a fantastic podcast - I hope you give it a listen and share your thoughts with [email protected].

AI Keeping Humans “In the Loop”

Create your own ChatGPT!

I’ve been playing around more with the additional features of ChatGPT-4 (the premium version) recently. You might have even heard about the ability to create your own ChatGPT.

What does that mean?

So, we’ve talked about the limitations of training data previously. (If you missed it, check out this post.) Essentially, an AI model is only as good as the data it is trained on.

When using ChatGPT normally, we do not have control over what specific articles are in the training sets. ChatGPT is trained to know essentially the entire internet.

This is great when you want a general or non-specific response.

However, what if you wanted ChatGPT to provide specific information to a specific audience? Or, what if you wanted it to perform in a certain way (such as not immediately giving students the answers to questions)?

Here’s where custom GPTs come in. Custom GPTs allow you to provide specific resources as training data so the responses are hyper-focused on exactly what you want.

I won’t go into all the details on creating a GPT in this blog because it would be too much to cover. if you’re interested in learning more right now, I recommend you check out this blog post from our sister blog, AutomatED.

Announcements! We will see you in the new year!

You’ll hear from the Teacher’s AIed team next on January 4th.

In the holiday spirit, we want to thank you for the greatest gift you could give us, a space to share what we are learning about AI in K-12 Education.

A Teacher’s AIed gift exchange

Before we go, the greatest Christmas present we could receive is for you to share Teacher’s AIed with a friend! Maybe your school’s holiday party is this afternoon and you could sneak a recommendation in between rounds of white elephant.

If you have any thoughts about how we’re doing or what you’d like to see more of in our posts, leave us a note!

Click the button below to refer your colleagues to Teacher’s AIed. It may be the best gift they receive all season!

Class dismissed!
