Listen to This: ā€œHow AI Could Spark Fundamental Shifts in Education.ā€

Generative AI will reshape Education as we know it.

But when?

Well, just like the physical height of students in a 7th classroom, thereā€™s quite a spread.

ā€œSome very reasonable people think we may crack all of this (referring to utilizing disembodied AI to accomplish complex tasks) within two years, others think it will be 100 years, [and] the consensus judgment is 20 years.ā€

Arran Hamilton, Cognitive Learning Groups

Though extreme, the idea of advanced AI systems being available to students in just two years is shocking! When I first heard this, I couldnā€™t believe it!

If youā€™re like me, you realize there is much to be done before we are ready for superhuman intelligent AI.

This was just one of many fascinating points from a recent EdSurge Podcast:

AI - Explain Yourself!

Generative AI can tell you who won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2013, but not in 2023. Why is that?

In this segment, we will ask Generative AI to explain itself. Why does it work the way that it does?

Letā€™s talk about its knowledge base. Unlike a human that can easily learn new knowledge, AIā€™s knowledge is limited to the data on which it is trained.

I asked ChatGPT for an analogy to explain this:

Imagine if you had to teach your students English using a dictionary from the 18th century - they'd be using words like 'thou' and 'thee' in their essays. That's the 'Limitations of Training Data' in a nutshell. The AI is like a diligent student trying to learn from that ancient book, doing its best, but inevitably speaking in a way that's a bit... Shakespearean!

ChatGPT

So, what is ChatGPT trained on? What is its data set?

The last knowledge base update for ChatGPT 3.5 (the free version), was in January 2022, so any knowledge after that is as unknown as calculus is to a 3rd grader.

So, for some questions, the age-old adage of ā€œGoogle itā€ might truly be better than ā€œask ChatGPT.ā€

New Report on Gen Z AI Usage

ā€œFour in five (79%) online teenagers aged 13-17 now use generative AI tools and services,ā€ according to a recent study completed in the UK.

That includes a wide range of AI tools - everything from ChatGPT to SnapchatAI.

The study further found that ā€œmost simply use generative AI for fun (58%), a third use it for work (33%) while a quarter (25%) turn to it for help with their studies.ā€

Using technology is simply second nature for members of Gen Z: people roughly in the 11-26 age range.
