Teach with expert insights on AI, curated by your trusty Teacher’s AIde
Hello and welcome back to Teacher's AIed, where we're navigating the end-of-semester maze with the grace of a teacher trying to keep students focused when holiday break is just around the corner – it's like herding festive cats on a sugar rush through a labyrinth of tinsel and distractions.
Here's what we have for you today:
In their compelling article, Lydia Cao and Chris Dede from Harvard's Next Level Lab offer a profound analogy: "As the moon reflects the radiance of the sun, AI reflects what humans are capable of—both truthful insights and biased misinformation."

This comparison captures the essence of AI's role in our classrooms, mirroring our strengths and weaknesses.
They delve deep into the nuances of AI, reminding us that while AI is a remarkable tool, it doesn't possess our human depth. It's up to us, the educators, to blend AI's capabilities with our irreplaceable human touch, ensuring we teach the deep, nuanced skills that AI can't replicate.
By embracing the insights from these thought leaders, we can skillfully navigate the evolving landscape of AI in education. Their guidance urges us to find a synergistic balance, using AI not as a replacement, but as a complement to our teaching methods.
Tool Alert: Guidde
“Wait, Mr. Poche, how do I set up the hanging indent, again?”
You have no idea how many times I heard that.
Wait, actually, you do because you likely hear the same thing every time you are working with students to create a works cited page.
I eventually got smart and created a quick video explaining this concept a la flipped classroom.
AI has now brought creating short, instructional videos to a new level with Guidde.
Similar to a screen recording, Guidde captures your screen. However, in addition to the video capture, it uses AI to create a written series of steps for students to follow.

Now, I haven’t tried this yet with academic content - and I’d be wary of doing so. However, I see this really streamlining instructions on how to use digital tools in the classroom.
Guidde even has a library of pre-built instructional videos and there is already a video on how to login to Kahoot!

Play around with it, and if you create a Guidde - please let us know at aithena.ai.
ChatGPT…Slacking on the Job?
Hold onto your smart boards because OpenAI's GPT-4 has been caught napping on the job. ChatGPT users and Open AI, the company that created ChatGPT, have acknowledged a dip in performance.
One AI newsletter I read even likened it to ChatGPT going on Winter Break early.
What does this mean for teachers?
From what we’ve read (check out this Reddit thread), you might need to prompt it again to truly answer your question if the first response isn’t up to your standards.
What’s the takeaway here?
As always, the better your prompt, the better the response. Now, it seems like this is even more so the case.
Hang in there, ChatGPT, Winter Break is right around the corner!
Before we go, we want to share a thoughtful testimonial from a reader.
“I’ve been loving your newsletters. They’ve been broadening my perspective about AI’s role and honestly lessening the fear I had toward it.”
If you have any thoughts about how we’re doing or what you’d like to see more of in our posts, leave us a note!
